Service Description

This 8-week handbuilding lamp class invites students to design and build a one-of-a-kind ceramic lamp—from concept to a finished piece that’s fully wired with hardware installed and ready to plug in. Taught by ceramicist Debbie Quick, this course is ideal for students ready to expand their handbuilding skills while exploring form, structure, and light as creative elements. Class meets 2 hours per week, with an additional 2 hours of open studio time included each week for independent work, practice, and finishing. Through structured demonstrations, one-on-one guidance, and plenty of hands-on building time, students will learn to plan a lamp concept, build with strong construction methods, and refine details for a clean, professional finish. We’ll cover building durable hollow forms, creating stable bases, managing weight and balance, and designing cutouts or textures that come alive when illuminated. Students will also learn the practical requirements of lamp-making—such as creating proper openings and channels for wiring, planning for sockets and cord exit points, and designing for stability and safe use. Surface development will include texture, carving, and glaze strategies that interact beautifully with light. This course supports a wide range of styles, from sleek and modern to playful and sculptural, encouraging each student to pursue a personal direction while learning shared techniques. By the end of the session, each student will complete a finished ceramic lamp with hardware installed (socket, cord, and plug)—ready to take home and use. All materials and taxes are included in the course fee. Whether you’re making a functional showpiece for your home or pushing your ceramics practice in a new direction, this class offers a creative and supportive environment to grow.
